Wet Venting
It is important to understand why this problem might be occurring. The bath and the shower seem to be separate entities with their own systems, but this is far from the truth. In most houses, the drainage system of the shower and the toilet are interconnected.
Likely, both the toilet and the shower have a shared drain which will also include a vent pipe, this is used for letting out the gases out of the sewage system. This will also prevent any pressure build-up within the pipes.
Clogged Sewer Drain
If the drain system has been blocked, then when the water drains down the sink it pushes some of the existing air out of the pipes, and when the air has no place to go because of the blockage, it will come out of the other end which might have been the toilet.
The other reason can be if the opposite of this problem, the draining water can result in a vacuum. This vacuum can suck down the air from the other opening.
How To Fix Clogged Sewer Drain
This problem should be fixed as soon as possible as continued blockage can lead to burst pipes as well.
But in this case you shouldn’t try to fix it yourself if you don’t have prior experience with it. It can lead to further blockage as well.
Contact your local plumber to get this problem fixed as soon as possible.
Blocked Vent Stack
The drainage system of both the toilet and the bath is connected to the same vent stack which is used to flush out the odour and the gases from the drain and inside of your house to the outside. This also helps in maintaining the proper atmospheric pressure within the drain.
The vent stack is one of the most important parts of your bathroom. If this gets blocked, then air can be trapped within the pipes which need an outlet to escape from, as there is water running down the other drain, it will come from the other end.
This can also create a negative pressure in your drainage system.
How To Fix Blocked Vent Stack
Usually, a vent stack is located on the roof of your house which can be dangerous to access. So if you are not sure about locating the vent stack, contact the nearest plumber.
Once you locate the vent stack, check if there is any blockage on top of it. These can include small leaves, twigs or other debris but if the blockage is somewhere deeper you should contact your plumber.
